It’s a solace life of a consultant. 8 weeks in and here are the differences in no particular order: 1. I now make the majority of my coffee intake at home. Thanks in no small part to the Aero Press I shit you not, it makes one of the best coffees you will ever have. You know when you get a good one and you can really taste the coffee - it’s thick and ‘at one’ with the milk and water? Yep. Every single time. It also cleans itself like a cat. 2. I am losing track of the days. As the Monday - Friday has lost its routine, the days are starting to blur and I find myself commuting into the city at 5pm rather than away from it. 3. I’m surfing more but exercising less. I now surf every Tuesday morning with Matty Roberts of projucer fame. We rise early, we hit the shire. We score a left bank to ourselves for an hour of sunrise. The less part comes because there’s not a gym in my home. The station overlooking Tama, see above, is the cheapest and best in the world, but I haven’t yet got my routine sorted. 4. Working for yourself is a guilty pleasure. You’re getting paid. No one is walking past your desk to check you up; you have no weekly WIPs; there are no annual reviews. So you work twice as hard to impress as you don’t want to lose the pleasure parts - see points 2, 3 and 5. 5. You learn the value of potential. Being out of the employment safety net, you suddenly realise your life is in your hands and you can make it what you will. You realise that if you’re going to make this work, you need to get your shit in line and organised, and you need to become more professional than you ever were employed. You start to feel inertia as you see your friends slowly snowballing on who have been doing this longer than you, which eggs you on and covers you in egg at once. 6. Time moves faster. Suddenly, nothing is boring. There are no meetings you dread, no watching the clock, no entertaining your dreams during 9-5. The pressure’s on, the chains are off. Time is fucking running out. 7. You are happier. 8. You start craving the outdoors more 9. You get engaged. 10. You find 10 ways to do melted cheese.
